I have spent more than a fair share (in my opinion) of time in waiting rooms lately. I spent time today in the day surgery center while my husband had a biopsy and I am always amazed at the different dynamics of families. I am very much a loner in the waiting room, I bring work and a good book. This isn't to say I mind visitors. Others, bring huge support systems, spouses, family, church members, ministers. What I find most interesting is the conversations.

Today I heard a man discuss prayer with another family, a family discussion on heaven and hell, a discussion on the merits of letting others get involved in home care. And there was one family who started out in a good mood, talking about food, family and friends, knowing a family member was getting reconstructive shoulder surgery. Then the phone rang, and the mood changed rapidly. Two family members were in a car accident, run off the road by another car, the car hit several trees and rolled. One person was ok, the other was potentially paralyzed. What I didn't know at the time was that the persons in the car were the grandmother and mother of the folks in the waiting room. They were torn, to stay and wait for the family member in surgery or go to the family in the ER. They decided to split up, two left in a hurry. The others stayed behind and quietly prayed. I decided to ask if I too could pray with them. I then was called back to recovery. I don't know the outcome for this family. I pray they have peace in whatever the outcome. They were still waiting when I left with my husband. Life is very much like a waiting room, you never know the conversations, and you never know how long you must wait! But watching and listening is pretty interesting. Sometimes waiting lets you enjoy life a little more, enjoy your weekend.
