The SA&D training program will focus on four primary areas :
- The introduction of the Integrated Crop and Pest Management (ICPM) principle for dealing with issues concerning soil, pest and improvement of crop production methods. The farmer field school methodology is to be adopted for farmer training in ICPM, a 16-18 week training period.
- The production and utilization of Moringa and soybean ,two nutritionally rich but inexpensive crops that are easy to grow, a 2-3 week training period. Moringa is an incredibly rich, fast growing tree that offers great hope to improve nutrition. The leaves, seed, branches and roots are edible. The dried leaves are ground into a power. Gram for gram, the powder provides: 7 times the vitamin C in oranges, 4 times the calcium in milk, 4 times the vitamin A in carrots, 2 times the protein in milk, 3 times the potassium in bananas, and 3 times the iron than spinach. For more on this amazing plant, visit http://miracletrees.org. Soybeans will be used as both a food crop and a cash crop, sold in the nearby city of Lubumbashi.
- Beekeeping has been the activity of choice among farmers for the generation of income, This activity could be considered an off-farm practice but provides the greatest income for farmers who practice it.
- Introduction of appropriate technology equipment: UMCOR-SA&D has recently introduced simple solar dryers to help in the process of drying foods for proper storage. These solar dryers are being used in Liberia with demonstrable levels of effectiveness in the drying of Moringa and other foods and the same will be tried in the Kasungami area. Appropriate technology water pumps, etc. could also be made available.
